From March 26 through April 6, eight cyclists rode through major metropolitan areas and college towns across Florida for the 180 Safe Ride. The 12-day, 1,200 mile bicycle journey raised awareness for the importance of wearing seat belts, using designated drivers or alternate transportation to prevent drunk driving and alcohol-related fatalities and not drinking when underage.
Funds raised during the 180 Safe Ride will be used by Florida-based S.A.F.E (Stay Alive from Education) to bring the "Street Smart" program to high schools and colleges throughout the state of Florida. The “Street Smart” presentation takes teens into the real-life drama experienced by firefighter/paramedics as they work to save the lives of youth who have made poor choices when it comes to not wearing seat belts, underage drinking or using illegal drugs. It is an interactive and gripping presentation that encourages participants to make responsible decisions regarding seatbelts and alcohol consumption.
The 180 Safe Ride fundraising campaign combined the human drama of dedicated individuals cycling for well over one thousand miles for a cause that affects every man, woman and child who uses our roadways.
While generating statewide media attention for this worthy cause, the 180 Safe Ride also highlighted the tremendous determination, dedication and pure physical will that each cyclist harnessed to complete this important and monumental journey.
