Cycling for Safe Driving

A team of cyclists has embarked on a 12-day, 12-hundred mile ride to try to raise awareness about seat belts and alcohol.

This is the second year for the S.A.F.E. Ride… short for Stay Alive From Education… and lead rider Jim Russell says they chose a 12-hundred miles because there are an estimated 12-hundred alcohol related deaths in Florida every year that are preventable.

“If it takes 12 hundred miles, 25 hundred or ten thousand miles to get this message out, then that’s what we’re going to do. This is our means of getting that information out there,” said Russell. “And you do not have to ride around the state of Florida or do anything else like that to make a difference. All you have to do is not let a friend drive drunk. Don’t drive drunk yourself. Don’t drink under age. Always, always, always buckle up.”

The cyclists started this morning at Florida State University and will wrap up their ride in Tampa on April 6th… visiting 12 other cities along the way.
